The region is quite large, spanning from the Gargano Peninsula in the very north all the way down through Otranto to the southern tip at Santa Maria di Leuca. Then we moved to a traditional Trullo home in Valle d’Itria near Ostuni for our second week.
Both locations proved centrally located and served as ideal bases for easy day trips to nearby towns. If you’re only staying a week and want to experience Italian slow living among the trulli, vineyards, and olive groves, I can’t recommend enough focusing your time in the Valle d’Itria area—specifically around Ostuni, Locorotondo, or Martina Franca.
For those hoping to stay near the coast with a 10-15 minute drive to the best beaches in the area, Monopoli makes a wonderful base. This quaint seaside town and old fishing village offers close proximity to fantastic beaches and serves as an ideal jumping-off point for exploring the region. It’s often overlooked in favor of its popular neighbor Polignano a Mare, but I’m here to tell you it has a lot more to offer as a coastal introduction sans the touristy things.
If you’re venturing to the very north of the Gargano Peninsula, Vieste is perfectly positioned. Known for its rocky coastline and pristine beaches, many tourists don’t make it this far, which makes it an authentic escape and a perfect spot for those seeking nature and relaxation.
The Heart of Puglia: Valle d’Itria’s Magic
Between Locorotondo and Martina Franca lies what I consider the best area to base yourself in all of Puglia. If you make a road trip through this region, most of the iconic small towns you’ll want to visit fall within the Itria Valley. Think picture-perfect towns like Cisternino, Ceglie Messapica, and the next-tip hilltop villages that define this stunning valley.
I highly recommend you pick a central location in this part of the valley, ideally situated close to about 3-4 great villages. From here, you’re also within reach of the iconic trulli town of Alberobello, and you can easily take a day trip to Matera, which sits just across the border. This sliver of area between Locorotondo and Martina Franca sets up well because you’ll have restaurants and three villages to choose from, all under a 30 minutes drive away.
What makes this one of the most beautiful parts of Puglia? Well, it’s full of winding roads and hills covered with Trulli houses, creating landscapes that feel almost otherworldly. During our stay at a countryside villa here, we felt transported to a world where rustic charm and slow living come together in perfect harmony.

At the end of our time in this whitewashed hilltop town, we found it offered wonderful views and an excellent collection of restaurants, all while being close to both the coast and many popular towns like Alberobello. The rolling hills of olive groves surrounding the town create that authentic escape feeling. You can also easily reach the beaches—we found the best beach clubs here only about 20-30 minutes away.

If you’re short on time, focus your energy on the Valle d’Itria and one coastal location. This way you get to experience both the countryside with its trulli and olive groves, plus the stunning beaches and historic ports that make this region so special.

Public transportation in Puglia can be quite a headache, which is my number one recommendation for visitors: pick up a rental car at your arrival airport or train station. We rented our car through Discover Cars, making sure to pick an automatic car from a reputable company—the entire process was easy.

Can you get around the region by bus and regional train? Yes, but it takes much longer and your access will be limited.
